The Pokédex originates in Pocket Monsters Red and Green, developed by Game Freak and released in Japan in 1996. In the Pokémon world, humans coexist with creatures that can be observed, captured, trained, exchanged, and entered into battles.

Professor Oak gives the player a Pokédex and asks them to document the Pokémon of the Kanto region. The player’s journey is therefore also a distributed research project in which a young trainer collects information for an established scientific institution.

The Pokédex is imaginary because it operates within a fictional world. It nevertheless has a double existence: the trainer carries it as a fictional electronic encyclopedia, while the player encounters it as an actual database interface implemented by the game.

Construction

The Pokédex is a portable electronic encyclopedia, identification instrument, research log, and taxonomic database. Its entries may include a Pokémon’s number, name, image, type, height, weight, habitat, cry, evolutionary relations, and a short description of its anatomy or behaviour.

Regional Pokédexes catalogue the creatures associated with particular territories, while the National Pokédex aspires to contain every known species. Later versions appear as folding devices, smartphone applications, machines inhabited by the electronic Pokémon Rotom, or—as in Pokémon Legends: Arceus—a handwritten field notebook.

Operation

Encountering a Pokémon usually produces a partial record. Capturing, evolving, breeding, or receiving it produces a more complete entry. The machine tracks how many species have been “seen” and “caught,” turning exploration into a measurable process of database completion.

Unknown creatures initially appear as gaps, numbers, or silhouettes. These absences encourage the player to travel, identify, capture, and classify further specimens. Because different game versions contain different Pokémon, completing the catalogue also requires exchange with other players. Universal knowledge is therefore presented as the result of both individual collection and social cooperation.

Interface / user position

The user is simultaneously trainer, collector, field researcher, and database operator. The trainer produces observations for a professor-led scientific project, while the player navigates menus and interprets missing entries as instructions for future action.

The Pokédex turns incomplete knowledge into motivation. Its blank spaces direct where the user travels and which creatures they pursue.

Epistemic promise

The Pokédex promises that the living world can be made comprehensible through complete enumeration. Every creature can be encountered, assigned a number, compared with others, and incorporated into a universal database.

Its epistemic logic joins knowledge to possession: seeing produces partial knowledge, while capture produces a complete record. “Gotta catch ’em all” is therefore both a collecting imperative and a theory of knowledge.

Political / social stakes

The Pokédex makes living beings legible as numbered species, measurable attributes, battle types, and collectible records. It encourages curiosity, comparison, and ecological attention, but also implies that a creature becomes fully knowable only when captured.

The apparatus delegates scientific labour to young trainers while professors retain institutional authority. It also connects knowledge to commerce: different games contain different creatures, encouraging players to purchase, exchange, and remain connected to an expanding media franchise.

Its politics are therefore ambiguous. The Pokédex teaches classification and collaborative problem-solving, while simultaneously transforming biodiversity into a system of possession, completion, and consumption.
